Press Release: Climate Modeling and Policy Hub Workshop

Jakarta, 17-18 January 2023. Institute for Research on Economics and Society, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia (LPEM FEB UI) has held the first workshop in a series of activities Climate Modeling and Policy Hub. This activity was held offline on 17-18 January 2022 at the Pullman Hotel Jakarta.

The workshop was attended by representatives of various member institutions, including the Institute for Sustainable Earth and Resources; Australian National University; Center for International Forestry Research; Center for Global Sustainability, University of Maryland; Research Cluster on Energy Modeling and Regional Economic Analysis, FEB UI; National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN); Center for Strategic and International Studies; SMERU Research Institute; Institute for Essential Services Reform; Indonesia Research Institute for Decarbonization; Bank Indonesia Institute; Mandiri Institute; Danareksa Institute; SDGs Hub UI; ClimateWorks; and J-PAL Southeast Asia.

The aim of this activity is to discuss the objectives, governance and potential activities to be carried out by Climate Modeling and Policy Hub, as well as a follow-up discussion to the previous series of discussions. Through the workshop four main activities were agreed Climate Modeling and Policy Hub, that is Exchange platform, Capacity Building Platform, Modeling, and Networking. In general, the Hub has four main objectives, namely:

  • Create a strategic discussion forum regarding modeling needs and priorities with the aim of creating better and more accessible information
  • Promote accountability and transparency regarding specifications, scenarios, data and parameters used in climate modeling
  • Developing activities in-house in developing climate, energy, and economic models to promote open source modeling
  • Promote optimization, improvement, and more effective targeting of climate modeling to gain policy insights

In closing, at the end of the activity session it was also agreed that LPEM FEB UI was designated as host Climate Modeling and Policy Hub for the next two years of management. As a follow-up to the initial workshop activities, the next activity was conceptualizing in more detail in-house activities and governance from the Hub management.
