Chaikal earned a Bachelor of Economics and a Master of Economics (MSE) degree from the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia (FEB UI) in 2002 and 2006. He then continued his studies at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo, Japan and obtained a Master's degree. of Arts (MA) in 2011 and PhD in Economics in 2015. His research interests are experimental and behavioral economics, banking and finance, monetary economics, econometrics and modeling.
He started working at FEB UI from 2003 to 2008 as a researcher at the Economic Science Laboratory, Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia (LABIE-FEUI). Since 2006, Chaikal has also been a lecturer at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia. After completing his PhD, while also teaching at FEB UI, in 2014 Chaikal joined LPEM FEB UI as a permanent researcher. Apart from this role, from 2016 to 2018, Chaikal also served as Deputy for the Master's Program in Economic Planning and Public Policy (MPKP FEB UI).
In 2018, he was appointed as Director of the Bachelor of Economics Program at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia and also as Head of the Digital Economy and Behavioral Economics Research Division of LPEM FEB UI. After this position, Chaikal was appointed Director of LPEM FEB UI in 2023.
Chaikal has published academic articles in several journals such as Japanese Economic Review and Economics and Human Biology, among other reputable peer reviewed journals. In addition, he wrote a book chapter in the book about Trade and Poverty Alleviation in the Asia Pacific Region with Milda Irhamni.
