Jakarta, LPEM FEB UI — Indonesian consumer spending on digital platforms such as on-demand services and online shopping remains stable or increases, in line with the easing of physical and economic activities in 2022. This marks a shift in consumer behavior from pre-pandemic times. This is the latest study from the Institute for Economic and Social Research, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia ("LPEM FEB UI") on 500 consumers who use the Gojek and Tokopedia (GoTo) digital platforms.
The same study found that the majority of Gojek consumers (57,6%) and the majority of Tokopedia consumers (85,67%) reported use of services in the GoTo ecosystem at the same level or slightly higher than the previous year. Furthermore, despite macroeconomic challenges in the global and Indonesian markets last year, consumers remained resilient with almost all consumers (92%) reporting no change or increase in income compared to the previous year.
Chaikal Nuryakin, Ph.D., Head of LPEM FEB UI, said, "This study is important to understand consumer spending habits and trends before and after the pandemic. On the one hand, the pandemic is forcing adoption digital commerce a faster one that persists after the pandemic. On the other hand, the easing of regulations regarding social restrictions also influences consumer shopping habits to return to offline channels. Moreover, this study also aims to identify future opportunities as Indonesia's digital economy grows. GoTo is an interesting research object because it has the largest ecosystem in Indonesia. "Furthermore, based on our previous research, GoTo provides added value of around 1,8? 2,2% to Indonesia's gross domestic income (GDP) throughout 2022."
“During the pandemic, consumers have become accustomed to the convenience that the service offers on?demand and online shopping. "Business partners also continue to innovate during the post-pandemic recovery period, so it is not surprising that consumers continue to use these services when physical restrictions are relaxed," he said.
This study is an in-depth study of LPEM FEB UI last March regarding the impact of the GoTo ecosystem on the national economy. LPEM FEB UI estimates that the GoTo Group will provide added value of IDR 349?428 trillion to the national economy, equivalent to 1,8?2,2% of Indonesia's gross domestic income (GDP) in 2022. This value comes from added value generated from company activities and partners in the ecosystem, namely driver partners and MSMEs.
